Bowing to pressure from various quarters, the income-tax (I-T) department has given an option to assessees under the salaried category to file their returns either in the old form of 2E (Naya Saral) or the new 2F which recently kicked up a controversy.
Briefing mediapersons about the new format here on Friday, chief I-T commissioner, Hyderabad I region, D.V. Dharmik said the option, however, would be given only if the returns were filed before July 31. From August 1, it is mandatory to file only in the 2F format.
Clearing doubts over the new format, he said, “The advantage of filing 2F is that the assessees need not submit any documents in support of their claims.” There was no need either to engage a tax professional to file the returns, he added.
Mr Dharmik said that help desks had been set up in all the I-T offices to guide the assessees about filing the 2F form. Besides, a help centre has also been set up called: Tax Awareness Form, 1-1-379/291, SRT 320, Jawaharnagar, RTC Crossroads.
